My friend SJ came in this week to taste a few of the wines under her care. She tells me that all the wines below are available at the fabulous new wine store on Whyte Ave. It’s called Color de Vino, so go check it out! The first wine comes from one of the most well-liked wine makers on the Canadian scene. Grant Stanley has been the head wine-maker at Quail’s Gate since 2003 and has produced some of the best Pinot Noir from the Okanagan in the last ten years, so I was excited to taste the results of his latest project, the:

50th Parallel Estate Pinot Noir 2012 (Canada)

Clear, light ruby hue. Smells to me like bitter cherry, wet cardboard, stinky dirt and a cool autumn day. It’s got a bright aromatic attack with an easy fruit/tannin balance and really pretty acidity that wraps around your tongue and lingers. New world Pinot Noir with Old World sensibilities. A must try for Pinot lovers. +766440 $$

Gaudou Exception Malbec 2011 (France)

Deep, dark ruby. Big blackberry fruit nose with a hint of caramel corn. Big fresh mouthful of dried fruit. Chewy tannins and a soft, easy, dry finish. Fun! +743400 $

Signeur de Lauris Cotes du Rhone 2011

This one is on the list at Culina Millcreek, a perennial favorite. Shiny, mid-ruby hue, it’s 2/3 Grenache, 1/3 Syrah. It’s got a sweaty, dark licorice nose with black currant and anise to boot. A silken, dry attack follows with sweet notes of fruit on the mid-palate that opens to an even, dry finish. Very like. + 760162 $$

The nose gives rich notes of cassis, aromatic cedar and zinnia, A satin smooth mouth-feel delivers hints of prune and ribena The deep, earthy feeling continues with a long, drawn out finish. Super elegant and delicious. This is the wine to impress your friends! +.377563 $$
