Spanish reds with a hint of french Rose

Hot on the heals of the Polizano team, came SJ and one of her Principals, Marc. It seems they had been running into each other all day and BiBO was the last stop. As usual in the wine world, once the business of the day was done, rivals in business end up tasting each others’ wine and sharing some food and laughter. So, back to the business of the day. We tasted:

Domaine de Chevalier Rose 2013

A Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend, it’s a clear, light strawberry hue. Sour strawberry nose with peony and wet dog. Tangy, bright attack. Lush and fresh, it’s pretty and acidic with a long, elegant finish. +764967 $$ A great choice for Christmas dinner!

…on to Espagne, in particular,Ribera del Duero Tempranillo (Tinto Fino)

El Pedrosal Crianza 2011

Shiny, mid-ruby colour.  Sweet, oaky, fruity nose. Lovely and spicy with a vague soapiness. Solid fruity attack with a hint of oak.(They use both French and American oak in aging.) Very dry and long on the palate. Good solid, well balanced wine. +765018 $$. Crowd pleaser. At Bin 104 & Divine Wine

Vina Pedrosa Crianza.2010

From old vines, this wine spends 18 months in french oak (6 months more than is required of a Crianza). It is a deep mid ruby shade. The nose is greeted with Dark caramel and ribena notes, vinous and chocolatey with spice. Big bright attack of vinous fruit and balanced oak edge. Nice. The kind of wine you’d like to come home to. +765017 $$ At Color de Vino.

Vina Pedrosa La Navilla 2009

Grown 1400 m above sea level in a rocky, windy vineyard, this wine displays a deep, glistening ruby hue. Dank, dark fruit, sea air, pepper and dark red peony flowers all appear on the nose. It shares a big, tannic attack featuring dark fruit and even tannin and acidity. Lovely balance achieved with 20 months in french oak. Sexy mouth feel and a great, fleshy, blueberry mid-palate. Really great. +765020 $$ SJ said this wine might be at Bin 104, Divine and Color de Vino. Call first to check.

Vina Pedrosa Gran Reserva 2006

There are only 6,250 bottles of this wine made. We tasted bottle number 1,643. It has a dense, ruby hue. A stinky, dope nose of black plum and pomegranate, white pepper and alfalfa. It’s a big mouthful of fruit and tannin. Fleshy and compelling. It’s incredibly sexy and dark. Clean notes of cedar on the mid-palate lead to a long, elegant finish with dried fruit notes that linger on. Superb! +765019 $$$ For me, it’s a real treat to taste something so rare. The finish lingers for a long, long time after the last swallow. A great gift for someone you love.
