Just Another Wednesday at Work (Part One)

Some days are an embarrassment of riches. On Wednesday I had visits from two reps, one after the other. SJ got there first so you’ll get the dirt on her wines first:

Emmolo Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc This Wagner Family spin-off is very clear. Almost light green. It has a big apple nose with fresh citrus. A pretty, tangy, dry opening of fresh gala apple with a creamy/tart finish. Nice. +493791 $$

50th Parallel Pinot Gris 2012

Another wine from Grant Stanley’s new project! It’s a clear, light green\gold.  It has a shy floral nose with chalky notes of rhubarb. Plush tangy bright attack with undertones of lime and sea salt. Pretty mouth feel all over the palate. Love. +223859 $$ Good good good.

Chiroulet Temps des Fleurs 2012

This is a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Negrette, Tannat blend from Gascogne. This winery boasts six generations of family wine makers, so you know they’ve got it right. It shows a light strawberry colour with a sweet strawberry, salt water-taffy nose that expands to notes of snapdragon and night-blooming stocks. Clean, delicious fresh wild strawberry attack with a creamy mouthfeel and long, long finish. Another rose for winter! +758943 $ Incredible bargain.

Ch. Pezat Bordeaux Superieur 2010

This wine is from the makers of the famed grand cru St,Emilion, Chateau Teyssier. You can think of it as a baby Teyssier as it is grown a stone’s throw from the illustrious St.Emilion vineyards. It displays a dark garnet hue. The blend is 75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc. It’s got a woody, truly ‘old school’ Bordeaux nose of dark Cassis and black licorice. A giant, classy, earthy attack with achingly firm tannins and an acidity/fruit combination that makes the teeth itch. Lean and firm with superb fruit and a long, even, drawn out finish. GORGEOUS! +756106 …on the low side of $$. An absolute steal!

Ridge East Bench Zinfandel 2012 (Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County)

Zinfandel fans always get excited when you mention Ridge and here’s why… Pretty, slick ruby hue. Smooth polished oak nose with caramel-salt popcorn and bright blackberry notes. Great splashy attack with big fruit and lovely balance. Great. Fresh and pretty. +653451 $$

Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot 2012

Dark black plum hue. Notes of dill, cardboard and red currant, rose petals and peony. Dense black fruit attack layered with plum, blackberry and  blueberry jam. Wonderfully well-balanced fruit with very easy soft tannins. Lovely and drinky. +493759 $$$ (sigh).

Cafaro Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

This is the current release of this wine, which shows genius wine-maker Joe Cafaro’s dedication to quality and his determination not to release any wine that is not ready for consumption. This is a rare gem. Only 610 cases of this wine are made each year. It displays a perfect ruby hue. The nose is blueberry, red plum and acetone with pomegranate, cassis and purple alfalfa. It is oily and dark. It sports a big, dense, fruit-forward attack that blossoms into big, sweet tannins and a bright acidity that lingers long on the back teeth. It’s slick and almost oily with a finish that just does not quit! Love & love. +717675 $$$ While it is pricey, it’s a good deal. Get some for your cellar at Bin 104 or Color de Vino.
