I always look forward to Jane’s visits. She breezes in from out of town with an always interesting array of wines from her wonderful portfolio. Last night we opened with the sister wine to the Encanto Mencia I’ve been pouring at BiBO for the last few weeks. Mencia is an ancient native varietal from Spain. The family who have owned the Vinos de Arganza in Bierzo since the fifteenth century were one of the financiers of Christopher Columbus and it seems probable that he would have been drinking Mencia on his adventures to the “new world”.
Last night though, we were tasting Godello. A native Spanish varietal, it was thought to be headed to extinction in the 1970’s. Luckily for us though, it is enjoying a revival. In the Bierzo DO, Godello vines grow on native root stock due to the fact that Phylloxera was stymied by the mountainous terrain that defines the region. Some of the fruit for the Godello we tasted comes from these older vines. The winery practices organic wine growing and wine making and have been certified sustainable since 2014. We tasted:
Encanto Godello 2013
Bright clear straw colour. Fresh cut wood and vanilla pudding, rosemary and orange thyme nose. Super Aromatic. Fresh dry attack with bright acidity and a sweet tart finish. Delicious splashy fun with a wonderful aftertaste. All stainless steel production. +767813 $ Magical Look for these wines with the name Encanto on the label. Amazing deals!
Fattoria le Pupille 2013 Morellino di Scansano
Deep ruby hue. Big tobacco note, burnt caramel with cherry blossom and honeyed tones. All stainless steel production. Splashy fresh attack with firm chewy tannins that open to clean caramel corn and candy corn notes. Delicious and drinky but would be great with a meal. +709794 low side of $$ Awesome!
Le Redini 2011 Tenuta degli Dei 2011 Toscana IGT
From the “Farm of God”, Le Redini translates to ‘the reins’ so that appeals to the rider in me… Jane asked me to guess the varietal. Clear velvet ruby. Sangiovese notes of burnt caramel and tobacco, black olive and thyme. Big chewy attack that opens to bitter almond and bitter pin cherry. Big mouthful that evolves,continually changing to savoury, meaty notes on the long elegant finish. +745137 $$ ❤ I guessed Sangiovese/Syrah but it’s Merlot/Alicante!
Elvio Cogno Bricco dei Merli Single Vineyard Barbera d’Alba 2011
Deep deep purple. Meaty, carmalized onion and dill aromas. Savoury, just yummy nose. Big jammy chewy attack that opens to graceful firm tannins and an inviting depth of flavour. Perfect acidity. Velvet smooth and elegant. Limited production. +727849 (6 packs) $$ ❤
Semper Sonoma Coast 2009, Ellenbach Vineyard
Another mystery varietal! Satin ruby hue. Fresh wax, deep black and red currant notes. Meaty with notes of peony and violet. Intense, deep dark attack that opens to purple fruit and dense firm tannins. Mellow creamy aftertaste that rides a long wide wave of a finish, I guessed Syrah (again) but it’s Pinot Noir! …grown 2 miles from the coast. 14.2% 150-6 packs produced it gets 14 months sur lees and one year in bottle prior to release. Single vineyard. +765224 3 packs. Shockingly wonderful.
