Last week I received an invitation to meet Alberto Zenato at the Edmonton Golf and Country Club to taste the Zenato wines currently available in Alberta. It was a beautiful day only made better because I got to go with one of my favorite new colleagues.

We started out with their Pinot Grigio 2014 which offered Tropical notes of coconut along with bright lemon-lime highlights. On the palate it was bright and fresh with notes of citrus and pineapple. It was lush and wonderful! (+39096 $) Moving on, we tasted:

Chardonnay Garda DOC 2014 – Unoaked Chardonnay, glistening golden/greenish hue. I get marshmallow, apricot and wet stone. Luscious rich attack that opens wide on the palate. Generous long finish that leaves a trace of peachy sweetness on the lips. +413193 $

Lugana San Benedetto Trebbiano 2014 – Old friends from the Bibo days will remember this one as a favorite of mine. Glistening clear golden green hue. Savoury thyme and lime peel aroma with pretty floral notes and wet clay. Rich fruity attack that opens up on the palate, embracing the tongue with well balanced acidity and rich minerality. It sings in the mouth. ❤ +479584 $

Lugana Sergio Zenato Selection Riserva 2012 bottle #14255 – From their best sights and the addition of oak aging, these are numbered bottles. Opalescent golden green. Fresh peach nose of nectarines and honey. Amazing rich attack that is yet fresh and balanced. Perfect winters’ night white. Would be great with fondue or roasted chicken. ❤   ❤   +703575 $$ (I’m in love with this wine!)

Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2012 – Shiny ruby hue. Rich cherry nose with hints of toasted almond and black earth. Rich attack of black plum and maraschino cherry. Firm dry tannins balanced by great fruit and acidity. Lovely long finish. Awesome. Over-delivers for the price. ❤  +413161 $

Cormi della Venezie IGT 2010 – Cormi is to remind you that this wine is made of Corvina and Merlot grapes, but also in dialect Cormi means “my heart”. Glistening mid ruby hue. Baby powder, cardboard and black plum with hints of black pepper and favorite sweater. Rich dense attack with soft even tannins and big generous fruit. ❤ Another old favorite from the Bibo days. +735894  $$

Zenato Ripassa 2011 – Dark ruby hue. Fresh cigar aromas invite you to the rich black plum attack and even dark tannins. Long and earthy.  +479766  $$

Cresasso IGT 2009 – Cresasso means clay and stone which is where this wine originates. 100% Corvina that displays a beautiful velvet ruby hue. Rich dark chocolate nose with wet clay and stone highlights. (Really! So earthy you want to lie in it!) Superbly rich dark attack of dried fruit, almond, earth and love. Dirty sweet but truly dry. Hard to describe, it’s an absolute dream of a wine. ❤ x 3 +740293 $$

Zenato Amarone DOCG 2011 – Meaty dark fruit nose with layers of spiced black cherry pie. Dense warm attack of velvet spices that sink deep into the palate and stay there.

Zenato Amaron DOC 2009 – Velvet garnet hue. Dried fig and fresh almond nose. Heavily nuanced attack just layered long and wonderful. Fresh cigar and open hearth is where this takes me. ❤ x2 +746088 $$$

Zenato Amarone Riserva DOC 2007 – Lovely dense garnet. Poopy rich nose of wet clay and dark storm clouds. Gorgeous rich dried fruit attack. Dense, dark and wonderfully long lived. A real treat.   ❤ x3  (no longer available – priceless)

Recioto della Valpolicella DOC Classico 2009 – Made from dried (passito) grapes, the colour is dark ruby/garnet satin. Aromas of Welch’s grape jelly and wild raspberry. Rich sweet attack. Delicate and strong, astringent and juicy. Heavenly. +755343 $$

Zenato Grappa di Amarone – Beautiful layered and wonderful grappa. Smooth and warm ❤ x2 +727077 $$$

We were lingering in the warm heady atmosphere, getting ready to leave when I heard someone say something about the Merlot. My ears perked up. How had I missed it?! Italian Merlots are amongst my favorite of all wines. I had to go back! I got a clean glass and tasted:

Sansonina IGT 2012 bottle #5877 – From an old vineyard on the south shore of Lago di Garda discovered and reclaimed by Alberto’s mother, this wine comes from dense plantings of Merlot mixed with old vines giving very low yields of amazing rich fruit. – Clear bright ruby hue. Dark chocolate, cherry and black earth aromas. Elegant dark, deep, fruity attack that dries out and reveals its rich clay and limestone origin. Stinging acidity brings on a long elegant finish. Confirmation of my love for Italian Merlot. ❤ x 3!  +69492 $$ Seek this out. You will be well rewarded.

Another magical tasting. Wonderful wines in a great location from a family dedicated to their land and the fruit they coax from it. Thursday afternoons just don’t get any better than this.
